I get a lot of inquiries about newborn photography, and I have to remind people I am a lifestyle newborn photographer.
That often is followed by explaining to people what that actually means. I love newborn sessions that show the big picture. I love capturing the connection of everyone related to this new, tiny human being who has flipped their lives inside out. I adore any shot of a newborn with an older sibling, and in my world, it is totally OK if the older sibling isn’t thrilled about the tiny new human. It’s amazing to document life as is. Detail shots are also a favorite of mine. I love juxtaposing the tiny fingers with the hands of mom and dad; it is easy to forget how little our children once were.
That said, I do love trying to capture some solo shots of the baby, if he or she will allow it! And not every baby wants to be left alone in a basket or on a bed, and that’s totally OK! It’s why I am not a posed newborn photographer; I do not have the patience for one or two shots in four hours. I feel like it makes what is already an exhausting and stressful time even worse if the baby isn’t game. Plus, there are so many other amazing shots I can get that document life as it is with a five day old or seven day old. Why would I want to get just one or two shots that look the same?
Baby Charlotte was one of those babies who didn’t really like to be away from mommy. And that was OK because as I got to know this family from the birth announcement shoot to the maternity shoot, I learned this about this sweet family: they have fun and love the heck out of each other. And that’s what I wanted to capture more than anything. That said, the strong-willed red-headed beauty let me get a few shots of her solo without crying!
