As a journalism teacher, knowing photography just came along with the long list of things I needed to be proficient in. Once I had kids, I was trying to freeze moments in time for my family since we didn’t live near them.
Sarah from Sarah Jo Photography has been an amazing photographer and given my family so many wonderful memories. More recently, she’s been an amazing mentor, helping me figure out how to start a new business.
When we moved to DC, I found Sarah Jo Photography and fell in love with Sarah’s lifestyle style, her easygoing attitude, and her unique eye. She’s captured so many memories for us…newborn photos of both of my boys, birthdays, a session with my mom. Her art is everywhere in my house. No exaggeration. She encouraged me to try photography myself and has mentored me answering a million questions along the way. This week she moves to a new home. I’m so sad. (And I’ll never be in pictures with my family again!!) Sarah, thank you for the gifts you gave me and so many families. You’ll be so missed!
One thing I have realized is that no matter which hat I am wearing—teacher, mom, wife, photographer, dog mom, military spouse—it’s important to find mentors. I’ve been lucky to have so many people I admire who have been willing to help me out, encourage me, and give me tools to help me succeed. I know that I wouldn’t be able to make it without all of these wonderful people. So, thank you to all of my mentors–Patty, Chuck, Fr. Kevin, Avis, Stephen, Brian, Lisa, Leah, Yvette, Corby, Joy, Sarah…I’m so lucky to have crossed paths with so many amazing people who have made all of the facets of Teresa a better person.

Hi. I’m Teresa. While photography is a part-time job for me, documenting your stories doesn’t ever get treated like it’s not important. My full-time gig is teaching high school English, journalism, and photography at an all-boys’ school in Washington, DC. Journalism is my favorite subject to teach because it is as much about writing as it is about the art of observing the world, and I became a photographer because of my experiences in photojournalism.
You’ll see in galleries with my families, children, newborns, or weddings, my style definitely is more about documenting connection and trying to create real moments. I love a good portrait, but my heart is happiest when I get real smiles from people loving on and playing with each other.
