Being a military spouse is hard. And deployments and TDYs (lingo for long trainings out of town) are hard. I have known that from my almost 12 years as an Air Force pilot’s wife. The past year has really been the first time my husband and I have had to deal with deployments or TDYs with our kids, though.
My kids are little. Emma, the oldest, is six. Liam is three and half. Patrick turns two next month. They don’t get why dad is gone a lot. They are lonely. They love stuffed animals, cars, and PBS. Sesame Street and Daniel Tiger only begin to touch the emotions that they have been feeling lately since they having been coping with dad being gone a lot.
I belong to a collab group on Facebook that puts photographers and makers together. Makers give photographers their products in exchange for a few photos. When I saw Natalie share her pillows, I knew I wanted these for my kids, but I didn’t think she’d pick me since so many talented photographers were also putting their name out there as interested.
These pillow covers are amazing, and they are such perfect gifts for deployments, TDYS, or any long distance relationship. You hand write a message, and Natalie puts it on a pillow case for you! As someone who is an avid journaler and who was lucky to get so many amazing letters on retreats from loved ones, I love the power behind handwriting. It tells a special piece of a story that you just don’t get when a message is typed.
My kids loved getting to make a special message for their dad, although it did take a number of tries, as the youngest just wanted to write all over the older kids’ messages and names. I’ve seen her add artwork to them, too. I wanted my kids to keep it simple this time, though.
They didn’t know that their dad was going to write one for them, too. Although, I’ve realized that they are not loving have to share the one pillow! It has been a comfort already to them though…one more reminder of dad when he is out of town.
So please, check out Stitches by Natalie! I love supporting small businesses, and this is such a unique, sentimental gift idea. Your loved one will love it forever!
